The place overlooks the Toscolano river at the foot of Mount Pizzocolo. The village is made up of two parts: Maderno (from the Latin “mater” meaning mother) and Toscolano (from the Latin “Tuscolanum”, which means holiday resort).

The village boasts important artistic heritage such as ancient churches which are still visible in the urban and extra-urban territory, but the best imprinting was left by the Romans in what remains of  Villa Ozio on the lake front of the Toscolano side, which was owned by Marco Nonio Macrino, a Roman consul of Brescia. He was one of Emperor Marcus Aurelius’ best friends. In 1381, the production of paper flourished here and its multiple uses are still part of daily life.

COMPARTE is pleased to guide visitors in a walking tour of Maderno, and continue on board a light rail train in Toscolano to the Valley of Paper Mills, among old mills and ruins that represent an attestation of a glorious age that started in the Middle Ages and continues to this day.
