Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy. Its water touches three regions, the norther side is on the border of the Trentino Alto Adige region, the western coast belongs to the Lombardy region, while the eastern coast pertains to the Veneto region. This area is affected by an endemic microclimate, with mild temperatures all year around, including in winter. Its landscapes have enchanted Italian writers such as Valerio Catullus, Dante Alighieri and Gabriele D’Annunzio, but also other European poets, Wolfgang Goethe, James Joyce, Lord Byron, who included the lake in their educational trips.
Other villages worth visiting are Sirmione, where Maria Callas lived for part of her life, Punta San Viglio, Limone and its citrus groves, Toscolano Maderno, with its papermaking activity, as well as Gardone Riviera and its Vittoriale residence, where Gabriele D’Annunzio spent the last days of his life. Gardone is also famous for the European “Belle Epoque” movement and the town hosted the Allies during the dictatorship, known as the Republic of Salò, which lasted for 600 days before collapsing.
