Monzambano is a village on the Mincio river. The first document regarding the village may be traced back to 967 A.D and recounts the passage of the German Emperor Ottone I. Today, evidence of the town’s past can be seen in the military castle and the civic clock tower above its walls. During the Second War of Independence, Camillo Benso, the Count of Cavour, stayed at Villa Melchiorri, where he joined Vittorio Emanuele II to discuss the armistice of Villafranca.
However, the municipality of Monzambano, also boasts another picturesque corner, the borough of Castellaro Lagusello. This place is home to a few hundred inhabitants and has been listed as one of the most beautiful locations in Italy.
The name Castellaro may be traced back to the XI century term “castelliere” which indicates a circle of walls without houses inside. This pleasant place is reflects in small heart-shaped lake adorned by marshy reeds and immersed in a luxuriant nature.
The COMPARTE tour includes a cultural stroll through ancient Monzambano and Castellaro Lagusello. There is a lunch break, during which it is possible to taste some traditional Mantuan cuisine with fresh pasta and sbrisolona cake, accompanied by an excellent local red wine.
